IIM-R Reduces by 10% weightage for CAT Scores

The Indian Institute of Management Rohtak (IIM-R) has reduced by 10% the weightage given to CAT scores in the admission criteria announced for its Post Graduate Programme (PGP) 2017-19 batch.

In the previous year, the weightage given to CAT score was 50%.The student intake is expected be around 150 to 160. The IIM has also tweaked weightages for some other parameters, including past academic records and diversity.

However, the overall process will remain the same with the initial shortlisting to take place on the basis of CAT 2016 cut offs and candidate profile. Shortlisted candidates will have to appear for the common Personal Appearance (PA) rounds conducted by the new IIMs. Final selection is based on CAT score, performance in WAT-PI and profile.

The admission policy document states that the basic objective of IIM-R’s admission process is to identify meritorious candidates for admission under each category– General, OBC, SC, ST and PWD/DAP.

While merit is the prime consideration, the Institute recognizes a possibility of skewed student structure in favour of male gender and engineering and related subjects at graduation in the normal course.Hence, it strives to ensure a better balance in opportunities among different subject streams and genders. It is also part of IIM Rohtak’s approach to duly recognize academic consistency and industrial experience.

The admission process of IIM-R consists of CAT, short-listing for Personal Appearance (PA) process, (c) conducting the PA process composed of Personal Interview (PI) and Written Analysis (WA) as well as any other component to be decided.

The Final Selection List (FSL) will be based on CAT score, PA score and profile score including Work Experience (WE) score as assessed during the PA process, score for Past Academic Performance (PAP) and any other criterion included.

Criteria for Short-listing for PA Process

Only candidates meeting the CAT 2016 cut off criteria listed in Table 1 for CAT 2016 score and the CAT 2016 component scores in respective categories will be considered for short-listing.

Table 1

From the candidates meeting the cut-off criteria in Table 1, only candidates meeting the cut-off criteria listed in Table 2 for X, XII and Under-Graduate (UG) reported marks in respective categories will be considered for short-listing.

Table 2

After processing through Table 1 and Table 2, what will be remaining are the candidates eligible for short-listing.

For each of these eligible candidates, the following (weighted) scores (Table 3) will be computed.

Table 3

* Scores scaled to 100 ** Assigned scores

For scoring the Work Experience, the following table (Table 4) will be used.

Table 4

IIM-R said to ensure gender diversity, female candidates will be assigned a grace score of 75 (Table 3). Similarly, to ensure subject diversity, candidates having a non-engineering background at graduation will be assigned a grace score of 75 (Table 3).

The eligible candidates are then ranked on the basis of their actual Grand Total Score (Table 3) and top specified number will be called for the PA process above a required percentile.

Compared to 2015, the weightage in respect to short-listing on QA, DILR and VARC has gone up from 45 to 50. However, weightage for 10th standard marks has come down from 36 to 20 as also for 12th standard marks from 42 to 30. Likewise, weightage for under-graduate marks are at 40 from the earlier 42.

The six new IIMs coordinating the PA process 2017, viz., Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi, Rohtak, Trichy and Udaipur, are together likely to call candidates for the PA process about 10-12 times (or more if decided so later) their total number of seats.

However, in case any of the six older IIMs (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Indore, Kozhikode and Lucknow) are willing to share their PA scores with the six new IIMs, wherever IIM Rohtak’s (and other five new IIMs) shortlist is common with the sharing older IIMs, the common candidates will not be required to appear for PA process separately with IIM Rohtak (and five other new IIMs).

The common candidates will be intimated in due course of time, on the names of older IIMs sharing PA scores with IIM Rohtak (and five other new IIMs).

Preparing Final Shortlisted Candidates

A weight of 40% will be assigned to CAT Total Score (Scaled to 100). The following scores or weights are assigned during the PA process: PI and WA 30; and WE, PAP and any other component that may be included 30. Minimum cut off may be applied to PA components.
