Within an year of its opening, IIM Nagpur has started attracting an increasing number of MBA aspirants, mainly on account of its mentoring by IIM Ahmedabad and a slight reduction in the required CAT 2015 percentile from 96.3 to 90 for admission to flagship PGP 2016-18 batch.

In the previous year, slightly more than 7000 candidates had stated IIM-N as an option with 1857 actually filled in the application forms and 53 of the 60 available seats were filled.

This year, the number of applicants went up to 4500 with 58 seats being filled till June 5, 2016. IIM-N had decided against increasing the seat capacity from the existing 60 due to acute space constraints as the Institute was functioning at its temporary campus in VNIT Nagpur.

A Union Cabinet meeting held on June 24, 2015 had sanctioned a student intake of 140 for each of the new IIMs.

This year, the number of applicants went up to 4500 with 58 seats being filled till June 5, 2016. IIM-N had decided against increasing the seat capacity from the existing 60 due to acute space constraints as the Institute was functioning at its temporary campus in VNIT Nagpur.

IIM-N sources confirmed that the Institute found that it could not fulfill the demand for increasing the intake from the existing 60 due to space constraints.

At present, IIM-N has hostel accommodation only for about 60 students and faculty members. A second set of hostel buildings at VNIT premises is expected to be ready by August.

The Institute has got a temporary reprieve of sorts as the first batch of 53 students were at IIM Ahmedabad for the fourth trimester. The new batch was being accommodated in their place. By the time the first batch returns by August end, the new hostel building would be ready.

The final selection process at IIM Nagpur had taken into consideration the candidate’s Past Academic Performance (PAP), Work Experience (WE), and performance in CAT.

After the first stage shortlisting, while finalizing the merit list, it gave 50% weightage to CAT 2015 scores. Subsequently, 30% weightage was given for PAP. Applicants who obtained above 90% marks in class X and XII and above 70% in bachelor’s degree examination were awarded full weightage of 10 points for each academic standard. A 20% weightage for the work experience of completed months (at the time of CAT 2015 registration) was also given.

IIM Nagpur also became the second IIM after IIM Sirmaur to finalize its admission process without GD-PI (group discussion-personal interview).

The institute started its first batch of Post Graduate Program (PGP) in Management on July 23, 2015. As a new generation IIM, the Institute aims to address the needs of a modern India, connecting aspirations and realities to attain benchmarks that are respected internationally. It would slowly increase its portfolio of activities to fulfil these objectives.

Meanwhile, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari, who represents Nagpur constituency in the Lok Sabha, had held a meeting with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and IIM Ahmedabad Director Ashish Nanda on July 3 to review preparations for setting up infrastructure for IIM-N at its 150-acre campus in Mihan.
