IIM Indore Professors Bag 1st Prize In ISB-Ivey Global Case Study Competition 2018

A business case study on Indiahikes by two professors from the Indian Institute of Management, Indore, has won the first prize that includes a cash component of $3000 in the ISB-Ivey Global Case Study Competition 2018.

The study, titled “Indiahikes – Treading the Untrodden Trail” was among the four in the final shortlist in the competition that had a total of 100 entries of the best India-centric business cases from around the world.

The competition is organised by the Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Case Development at the Indian School of Business (ISB) in partnership with Richard Ivey School of Business, Ontario, Canada.

It is supported by the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) and the Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS). The objective is to facilitate the build-up of high-quality, internationally benchmarked cases about Indian businesses by reaching out to a wide network of Indian and Global B Schools. The submitted cases are suitable for use in MBA classrooms across the globe.

The case study was researched and written by Prof Swapnil Garg, Associate Professor, Strategic Management and Prof Sanjeev Tripathi, Associate Professor, Marketing, Sports Management at IIM Indore.

Indiahikes, the subject of the study, organises trekking tours and related facilities. The IIM professors were intrigued by the story behind Indiahikes after participating in the Himalayan Mountain Challenge Programme in 2017.

The program enables students to integrate experiential learning with trekking in the mountains. The physicality of the experience enables them to overcome limitations and achieve new levels of confidence, the company says on its website.

The winner in Human Resource Management category went to a case study titled “iimjobs.com – Integrated Analytics for Talent Management?” by Debolina Dutta, Research Scholar, Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur and Bishakha Majumdar, Assistant Professor, FORE School of Management, New Delhi.

The case study covered all aspects of the company, right from its inception, growth and future possibilities. It also takes into account the challenges that include the remoteness of the operations, extreme weather conditions and unpredictable circumstances.

The second place in the competition went to “Thyrocare: Disrupting the Indian Diagnostic Industry” authored by Dr Suresh Srinivasan, Associate Professor Strategy at Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai along with Swati Agarwal and Sameera Sepuri, PGPM Class of 2018. They also received a cash prize of $ 2000.

The winner in the Marketing category was a case study titled “Nappa Dori: Crafting the Branding Strategy” by Prof Neena Sondhi, Marketing, International Management Institute, New Delhi and

Dr Rituparna Basu, Associate Professor – Marketing, Retail and Entrepreneurship at International Management Institute, Kolkata.

Nappa Dori, meaning leather and thread, was set up in 2010 by Gautam Sinha, a NIFT graduate in fashion design, disrupting disrupted conventional design mandates in handcrafted leather.

The winner in Human Resource Management category went to a case study titled “iimjobs.com – Integrated Analytics for Talent Management?” by Debolina Dutta, Research Scholar, Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur and Bishakha Majumdar, Assistant Professor, FORE School of Management, New Delhi.

Honourable mentions went to “P.N. Gadgil Jewellers: Crafting a Sparkling Brand” by Sonia Mehrotra, and Uday Salunkhe, S.P. Mandali’s Prin. L.N.Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research.

“Universal Basic Income: Is there a Case for India?” by Madhvi Sethi, Saina Baby and Vanditaa Dar, Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Bengaluru.

“Process Innovation Commodity Trading by Amalsad Cooperative Ltd” by S.R. Asokan and Harekrishna Misra, Institute of Rural Management, Anand.

“Mannarkkad Rural Service Co-operative Bank: Innovating at the Edge” by Nidheesh Joseph, Abhishek Totawar, Indian Institute of Management Tiruchirappalli and Ranjeet Nambudiri, Indian Institute of Management, Indore.

“Swadhaar: Self-Support through Financial Services” by Rajesh Panda, Madhvi Sethi and Pooja Gupta, Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Bengaluru.

“Grasim Industries Limited and Aditya Birla Nuvo Limited Merger: A case of Wealth Creation?” by Barnali Chaklader, IMI, Delhi and Garima Chaklader, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.

“Vakrangee: Anatomy of Stock Valuation” by Pooja Gupta and Zahid Jamal, Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Bengaluru.

“Technology Adoption through Change Management: The Story of Ambuja Cements” by Amitabh Sengupta, KJ Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research and Rahul Bharat, Ambuja Cements Ltd.

“Saregama India Ltd: Repositioning the Value Proposition” by Rituparna Basu, International Management Institute, Kolkata and Neena Sondhi, International Management Institute, New Delhi.
