Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM B) has announced the schedule for the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2016 to be held in two sessions on December 4 at centres located in 138 cities across India.

The online registration for the test opens on August 8 and closes on September 22 at 5:00 pm Admit Card could be downloaded anytime from 1:00 pm on October 18 to Exam Day. The release of results in tentatively fixed for second week of January 2017, Prof. Rajendra K. Bandi, Convenor, CAT 2016, IIM Bangalore, said in a press release.

Belaying expectations of extending the test window to two days, IIM B, convenor of the test for this year, followed the pattern set by IIM Ahmedabad last year by scheduling the exam on a single day in forenoon and afternoon sessions.

The online registration for the test opens on August 8 and closes on September 22 at 5:00 pm Admit Card could be downloaded anytime from 1:00 pm on October 18 to Exam Day. The release of results in tentatively fixed for second week of January 2017.

Candidates will have the option to select four Test Cities in order of preference.  Test Cities and Centres will be assigned to the candidates only after the last date for CAT 2016 registration. So candidates need not rush to block slots and sites in the initial days of registration.

“We will try our best to assign candidates to their first preferred city.  In case it is not possible, they will be assigned a city following their given order of preference,” Prof. Bandi said.

“In the rare case that a candidate is not allotted any of the preferred cities, he/she will be allotted to an alternate city. However, candidates will not be able to select the session because it will be assigned randomly,” he added.

Candidates are allowed to pay the registration fee through online mode only, including Credit Card, Debit Card, and Net Banking.

After submission of Application, they will be permitted to download the Admit Card from October 18 onwards, till the date of examination.

The duration of the examination will be 180 minutes. There will be three sections:

  •  Section I: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension
  •  Section II: Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
  •  Section III: Quantitative Ability

“Some questions in each section may not be of multiple choice type.  Instead, direct answers are to be typed on the screen. The tutorials will clearly explain this.  Also, we will allow use of basic on-screen calculator for computation,” Prof. Bandi said.

Candidates will be allotted exactly 60 minutes for answering questions in each section and they cannot switch from one section to another while answering questions in a section.

IIM B also chose to retain the changes made last year in having three sections as also not allowing candidates to switch from section to section and back while answering questions.

The IIM B announcement said the Tutorial to understand the format of the examination will be available on the CAT website from October 18. Candidates are advised to work on the tutorials, available on the website, well in advance, it added. (Image Courtesy : byjus.com)
